Just a little further south of Protaras is the wild, undeveloped peninsula of Cape Greco. Cape Greco itself has a string of spectacular sea caves and large rock formations and the most incredible views make this area a very popular place to spend the day. This stunningly beautiful coast with its nature reserve is known around the world for snorkeling and scuba diving, and is also a government protected conservation area. There are plenty of walking paths and routes here and the more adventurous chance diving into the sea. The area is a very popular destination on the first Monday of Lent. This is a Bank Holiday in Cyprus and Green Monday picnics are taken here. Families and friends gather for an outdoor vegetarian meal of bread, vegetables and olives at the start of this Orthodox festival of fasting and contemplation. Beyond Cape Greco stand the Palaces, named for the striking rock formations and the rocky beach sculpted by the waves that give it an almost architectural appearance - hence the name. White rocks and crystal waters give the sea an ethereal blue and green glow. This site can only be reached by boat but there is no shortage of excursion boats. Just beyond Cape Greco is the beautiful sheltered beach of Konnos Bay, overlooked by a pretty little café. A fine spot for those looking for peace and tranquility were it not for visiting boat trippers and a watersports centre where you can hire noisy jet skis to annoy everyone. By road it's about 2km east of Ayia Napa on the road to Protaras. It must be one of the most picturesque beaches on Cyprus and well sheltered from the winds. For those wishing to explore further, Paphos is only a two hour drive away.
