Paralimni

Paralimni is now the largest town in the free Famagusta (Ammochostos) district, situated in the southeast of Cyprus.  Paralimni town is situated a little way inland and since 1974 has been the administrative centre of the district. A short 10 minute drive away will find you in the lively town of Ayia Napa.  Protaras with its golden sands and inviting crystal clear waters is also only 10 minutes drive from Paralimni.  For those wishing to explore further, Paphos is only a two hour drive away.

In the heart of Paralimni you will find a beautiful town square dominated by the twin aisled vaulted church dedicated to the Virgin Mary that is worth visiting. It is decorated with unusual 18th century porcelain plates. The church, parts of which belong to the 13th century that houses a small ecclesiastical museum.  Across from the church you will find a newer plaza complete with an ornate fountain. The town has a friendly utilitarian charm. The newer square is bordered by some trendy cafe bars and traditional taverns too where you can relax with the locals watching life go by. For the shoppers amongst you, retail therapy is a must; there are plenty of boutiques, shoe shops and a handful of handicraft shops. The town streets are quaint and there is an air of timelessness about the place which is enhanced by the pavement cafes where the locals spend the warm Cyprus afternoons drinking coffee and playing the age old pastime of backgammon.  In the evening things are more dynamic and energetic.  Paralimni offers a refreshing alternative for anyone who is tired of the city hustle and bustle.
